Airport radio overhaul G
round staff of the Spanish airline Iberia are to benefit from an updated TETRA digital radio system for communications
at their main base, Madrid’s Barajas airport. A new network based on Motorola’s Dimetra IP Compact infrastructure is being be installed by local partner Amper Sistemas.
Growing demand Replacing a previous Motorola TETRA installation at the airport, the Dimetra IP Compact system will be able to re-use more than 1000 radios and six base stations, because the old and new TETRA systems are compatible. Motorola Solutions explains that its

Offering guaranteed TEDS interoperability
W
ith a certificate awarded in June by the TETRA Association’s official test
house, Motorola Solutions has become the first interoperability-certified supplier of TEDS-enabled (TETRA Enhanced Data Services) equipment. The company’s Dimetra IP 7.1 infrastructure and its MTM5400 TETRA mobile radio have passed TEDS interoperability (IOP) testing conducted by ISCTI (Istituto Superiore delle Comunicazioni e delle Tecnologie dell’Informazione), the independent Italian government test house appointed by the TETRA Association. An IOP certificate assures buyers that
the products have been rigorously tested and that the functions listed in the certificate meet the requirements of the TEDS standard.
Richer experience “We’re excited to be leading the way with TEDS and making TEDS-enabled solutions a reality for our customers who rely on fast access to visual data”, commented Tom Quirke, vice president and general manager of the global TETRA organization of Motorola Solutions. “TEDS provides secure, higher-speed data results for existing data applications and allows a richer user experience by combining image, text and voice with field operatives.

a highly flexible and scalable architecture that supports voice and data services as well as mobile applications, including remote access to databases and image transmission. Radio communications, both indoor and outdoor, will be greatly improved for Iberia staff working in different areas of the airport. “More and more airlines and airport operators

aunching a completely new professional sports team can be costly – but it is also an opportunity to ensure that the team is equipped with the very latest technology in all spheres. The Gold Coast Suns, a new professional Australian Rules football team, has taken this approach and chosen to use TETRA radios for all aspects of its operations. Recently the team embarked on its inaugural season in the Australian Football League (AFL), marking a major investment in the coastal region south of Brisbane, on Australia’s east coast. AUS$144 million has been invested in the team’s stadium, which has a capacity of 25 000 and will provide employment for up to 900 people.
Robust radio
In setting up the team and its stadium, the Suns opted for TETRA technology, primarily because of the secure communications that it guaranteed. Having selected Damm TETRA infrastructure, the team decided that its key criteria in selecting terminals would be robustness and audio quality. This was because of the potential for radios to be dropped or knocked and because of crowd noise during matches. Sepura terminals came out ahead on both counts and an order for 140 radios followed. They will be used for a wide variety of purposes, from crowd control and maintenance at the stadium to passing messages between coaching staff during games.
Helping out Mark Wood, managing director of GMG, Sepura’s local channel partner, commented: “The team has always been willing to try new ideas and the selection of Sepura terminals for their communications was another example of the team choosing the best available products for their needs.”
Doug Bowden, of Sepura in Australia, added: “This contract is particularly pleasing, as the establishment of a new team is a special event and we are really thrilled to be helping out.”
