Delivering regional TETRA coverage to St Petersburg

The largest TETRA network in north-west Russia is a region-wide system serving the city of St Petersburg and surrounding areas – altogether, around 50 000 square kilometres

D

eployed in 2010 and 2011 using DAMM TetraFlex® infrastructure, the 32-site system in the North

West federal region of Russia is operated by Tetrasvyaz, Russia’s biggest TETRA operator. It has 20000 subscribers currently and a design capacity of up to 65000. Tetrasvyaz was appointed by the St

Petersburg Government to operate a TETRA communications system covering all public city- wide emergency agencies, including ambulance and emergency services, police, healthcare facilities, utility services, the city authorities and regional civil defence. But the network now meets the needs of a

wide range of commercial and industrial users also. All public transport in the St Petersburg area is served by the system, through applications supporting functions such as the dispatch control centre, signalling control, electronic passenger timetables, telemetry and much more. Numerous commercial and industrial

companies also subscribe to Tetrasvyaz’s TETRA service, including manufacturing sites (for example, a General Motors plant), taxi companies, private security companies and more. Te TETRA network has also been in action for major sports events and international political conferences, such as the annual International Economical Forum, Red Wings event and more.

Expanding functionality “Tetrasvyaz is devoted to continuous improvement of technical features and in its systems, always trying to expand services and functionalities of their equipment”, said

Alexander V. Moldavanov, president of the Tetrasvyaz Consortium. “We chose innovative solutions which comply with high international standards of reliability. “For the north-west region, Tetrasvyaz chose

the solution from their European partner, DAMM Cellular Systems. DAMM’s TetraFlex® was chosen due to its feature-rich, easily deployable and cost-efficient solution. Te fully-distributed IP network architecture and full redundancy of the system give the highest reliability and no single point of failure.” Te network infrastructure is equipped with

a combination of indoor and outdoor TetraFlex® base stations, with dispatchers optimized for Russian-speaking users, plus logservers, packet data services and other options. An important feature is the network’s flexibility. “When deploying additional base stations to the network, we do not need to interrupt operation of existing active users on the network”, said technical experts at Tetrasvyaz. Moritz Hynkemejer, sales director at DAMM

said: “Since entering the strategic alliance with Tetrasvyaz, the feature-rich and easily scalable concept of the TetraFlex® infrastructure, together with the highly professional radio communication and application expertise from Tetrasvyaz, has proven to be the excellent foundation for providing safe and reliable radio communications networks in Russia. “We are proud being able to support the

St Petersburg Government in their goal to achieve increased safety as well as operational and economical efficiency for the St Petersburg region.”
