TECH DIRTY SOUTH WARS 2
Prime Loops WAV / Acid / Apple / Ableton / ReFill £14.95
VERDICT 9/10
THE dominant movement in US hip-hop over the last few years has been Dirty South, with heavyweights such as Rick Ross, Gucci Mane & Lil Jon perfecting a low slung and yet epic sound that’s rocked clubs and set charts alight. One of our favourite ever sample packs in this style is Prime Loops’ ‘Dirty South Wars’, so we fired up this sequel with high expectations.
Just like its predecessor, the sound quality is near the top of the scale and each of the 10 construction kits feel authentic from start to finish.
Weighing in at around 14 elements each, plus one shots and full mixes, the kits all occupy a different key (usually minor) and overall tone, while remaining faithful to the core sonic template of the genre.
Neatly, the kits each tend to rely on a different main element, be it a booming 808, dramatic brass section, melodramatic strings, or trance-style synths, and it’s fair to say these elements are but a rap away from the next hit. Some may complain about the lack of vocals, but we’d rather sample packs focused on the right sounds and let us worry about the top line. Another winner.
