f rom the ceo National Recognition for Nursing Excellence

WILLIAM D. PETASNICK CEO, Froedtert Hospital

O

ne of the best things about being chief executive officer of Froedtert Hospital is meeting our patients and their families and learning their stories. The stories range from a

minor mishap resulting in a short trip to orthopaedics to the long journey of organ transplantation. The diagnoses and journeys vary widely but almost always share a common element: the positive affect Froedtert’s nurses had on the care experience.

Nurses are among America’s most trusted professions, outranking

all other professions in Gallup’s annual Honesty and Ethics survey for 11 years running. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) recently confirmed what I have always believed: Froedtert’s nurses are among the best in the nation. In June, Froedtert Hospital again attained designation as part of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®

. The Magnet program recognizes excellence in nursing

and only about 6 percent of the nation’s hospitals have achieved Magnet recognition status. This is the highest national honor an organization can receive for nursing excellence, serving as the gold standard for nursing practice.

Research has shown that patient care outcomes are better at

Magnet hospitals. The focus on outcomes at Froedtert Hospital has led to the implementation of an extensive array of innovative approaches to ensure we continue to deliver the highest quality patient care.

Magnet designation is achieved through a rigorous and lengthy

process that involves the review of thousands of pages of documentation and a thorough site visit by professional appraisers. They evaluate organizations against stringent quantitative and qualitative standards that epitomize excellence in nursing service, clinical outcomes and patient care.

I am proud of our nurses and hope you will join me in congratulating them on their continued commitment to excellence.
