races, but seeing her train for — and finish — a full marathon inspired more than just admiration. It also ricocheted, creating a mentoring opportunity for Lukovic.
“Now they want to do one, too, and they’re asking for my help,” she said.
Spiritual health | Five years ago, a courtyard path on the Wishard Health Services campus was opened to employees as a safe place to get fresh air and exercise during the workday. It soon became much more.
It was suggested early on that nursing
staff adopt a section of the area to care for. They could plant flowers, vegetables or herbs, or add garden sculptures and stepping stones. The response was
overwhelmingly positive. “When the garden first came
about, a couple of us had just lost our parents,” said Lynn Denny, RN, BSN, MBA, director of women and children’s services and medical/surgical, correctional health. “Some assistants [adopted plots] as a memorial to our families. One girl brought in a park bench that was her father’s. A lot of the flowers we planted were from my mom’s funeral.” Today, individuals and nursing units share responsibility for making the Wellness Garden an oasis where staff, patients and visitors can relax and reflect.
“Each [plot] has its own personality and uniqueness,” said Mary Robbins- Nierste, RN, director of Wishard Wellness/Health Connection. “Many of them have labels [explaining] what they’re about and why people started the garden.” ●
