BUSINESS SCHOOL

It was then the turn of Mark Peters to lead the tributes to Fran - Peters having been one of the first Managing Directors of Henley. Dr Andy Andrews spoke fondly of the time that he and Fran spent at “that other business school” before they worked together at Henley. Johann Coetzee took the opportunity to finally read a love letter he had written to Fran many years ago, but had never sent it to her. He concluded, “Fran is a master in business administration.” Finally Gary Thomas read some of the tributes from more than 400 alumni who wrote to Fran, and he had the assembly first laughing and then crying as he took us on a rollercoaster journey.

He continued, “Fran knows that education is about lighting fires, not filling vessels. Among her many attributes are her work ethic, her honesty, her loyalty, and her absolute belief in people’s potential. She has always understood the power of honest feedback. She speaks out truthfully, with courage and good intent, in order to help others to stand in reality and face up to challenges. Her uncompromising loyalty to her staff, to Henley and to the students is such that people in South Africa quickly learn not to show doubt or disrespect for any of these when she is around. Her unconditional belief in people’s equality and potential has meant that she has little time for excuses, self-pity or complaints - be it in herself or in others.”
