high-voltage section in a single rack mountable package instead of a rack mounted converter and separate air spaced high-voltage section, resulting in a 40 per cent lower volume than previous supplies, coupled with con- siderably lower weight and cost. These reliable, rugged systems are mains powered and provide a range of maximum output voltages from 1kV to 80kV. A parallel option offers a maxi- mum output power of 20kW. The greatest size reduction has been achieved in the high-voltage part of the system, where the use of an air- insulated stack has made a significant and marked contribution.

The company has invested in sophisticated analysis tools and designed a proprietary high voltage sleeve using reaction injection mould- ing equipment. Along with the reduc- tion in size, these techniques have allowed the final output resistor to have a comparatively high value, reducing component stress and increasing reliability.

A number of features are incorpo- rated to ensure that system integrity is maintained during adverse operating conditions. These include continuous primary current monitoring with fast pulse truncation and soft start, exten- sive thermal monitoring and auto- matic shutdown on key components, passive output current limiting for instantaneous surge control and inde- pendent output overvoltage sensing. In some applications, the ability of a power supply to perform accurately across a wide output voltage range can be critical. Typically a supply may be required to perform as well at a few hundred volts output as it does at many tens of kilovolts.

The company has addressed this with its OLS10KD, which combines in a single chassis a 10kW supply offer-

ing maximum output voltages from 1kV to 80kV with a 1kW supply offer- ing maximum output voltages from 100V to 10kV. The low-energy 1kW supply has superior ripple and regula- tion at the lower output voltages and maintains this to below 100V. The Series OL20K 20kW power supply range offers output voltages from 60kV to 200kV and beyond. The eight members of this family have been built to meet the rigorous demands of ion beam and electron beam system requirements.

In addition to standard units, the supplies can be customised to meet specific requirements. Each system consists of a converter, in a 6U, 19- inch rack-mounting unit, and a sepa- rate high voltage multiplier assembly. Power conversion is achieved by zero-voltage switching a full bridge of the latest generation, insulated gate bipolar transistors.

Power supply demands Ion implantation systems place many stringent requirements on the power supply. Among these is the ability to manage multiple arcing events. The supplies incorporate passive arc cur- rent limiting, as well as the company's proprietary arc count and extinguish (ACE) arc management system. This continuously monitors the output of the supply and can be pro- grammed to perform a number of dif- ferent actions if one or more arcs are detected along the way.

This dramatically improves the reli- ability of the entire system in which it is installed. In addition, protection is provided against over-voltage, over- temperature, fan failure and continu- ous short-circuit. To meet the requirements for low output ripple, high long-term stability and the good regulation mentioned

here it is very important to use care- fully selected high-voltage compo- nents that are ideally suited to the specific application and adequately de-rated to ensure optimal perform- ance in the required working range. PCB design and minimising noise is also key in ensuring that the control circuitry is not affected by the operat- ing or environment the power supply is within.

By using a detailed understanding of every aspect of the application and design, a power supply to meet the customer's exacting requirements can be developed with relative ease. A power supply failure can cause costly down-time in any application. It is essential that the high-voltage sup- plies used in ion implanters offer the highest possible levels of reliability to keep production running.

Bespoke customer solutions To meet this requirement, the company works with customers to understand the application in detail, not only under normal working conditions but carefully considering every possible scenario that could affect the system. For example, the conditions the power supply might have to deal with are output shorts, arcs to opposite polarities, continuous arcs to ground, high operating temperatures, reflected voltages up to twice the maximum output voltage or large voltage surges on low voltage analogue signal lines. As a result of this understanding, the company can choose the right topology for the supply, control design risks, select the most suitable packag- ing, implement a tailored testing regime and ensure that instillation is carried out by personnel with the rele- vant knowledge.

The OLS10K, OLS10KD and OL20K product ranges have been designed to be highly customisable. They offer custom user interface designs, both analogue and digital; a customisable arc management system; dual range capability to increase the already wide range of operation; a wide range of input voltages to cater for markets worldwide; and parallel operation to increase output power.
