Chatter RE: BIKINI-CLAD EARLY SUMMER 2011 COVER ANGLER CHRISTINA ECHOLS

Are you kidding me? The ladies are offended by the cover? This girl isn’t just a model used as a gimmick to get guys to buy the magazine. She’s a kayak angler and a darn good one at that! And most of us actually wear a swimming suit while

angling on a fishing kayak. Get with the times, folks! EXCERPTED FROM A COMMENT POSTED ON THE KAYAK ANGLER FACEBOOK PAGE BY JEAN-CLAUDE CORMIER, FLORIDA.

of Kayak Angler than any other in a shorter time. Keep up the good job,” Dean Tomas of Slowride Guide Services wrote. Kayak fishing TV personality Jim Sammons wasn’t satisfied. “I feel this cover is just appealing to the low- est common denominator, people that get off their kayaks and wade fish,” he joked. At least we think he was joking.

T&A COVER SCANDAL The cover of the Early Summer 2011 is- sue galvanized readers, inspiring a flood of Facebook comments greater than any other in the magazine’s history. Seemingly every- one looked past the gorgeous 40-inch tarpon proudly hoisted by talented angler Christina Echols, instead focusing on the bikini-wear- ing peace officer’s physical attributes. A few commenters appeared to believe we’d hired a “fish model” to sex up the cover. “Have you really sunk this low to sell issues? Come on, you’re a better magazine than this,” Barbara Price Louttit wrote.

“I knew right away there would be people

accusing Kayak Angler for wanting to be like GAFF or other magazines that feature lady anglers in revealing clothing. The fact is she can fish with the best of them!” KA forum regular Bill Sikora retorted. Echols headlined our new Snap Cast feature (www.kayakangl- ermag.com/0009). Readers who looked clos- er discovered that she rigs her own kayaks, first picked up the paddle in 1998, and loves to stalk the Indian River Lagoon shallows. Most comments were enthusiastically com- plimentary. “Best cover yet,” Dave Santiago gushed. “We have sold more units of this issue

CROC ATTACK, MAYBE In April Mike Gregory and Leigha Poulson were sharing a predawn stargazing paddle not far from a Florida Keys crocodile refuge. A large animal flipped the kayak; the pair emerged from the confusion with ripped clothes and minor scratch and bite wounds. Gregory pinned the blame on an American crocodile, although experts couldn’t rule out an alligator, also common in the area. The Kayak Angler blog’s coverage of the incident (www.kayakanglermag.com/0010) inspired readers to discuss the reality of sharing the water with carnivorous reptiles.
