KNOTS

YOUR CONNECTION with that fish of a lifetime is only as strong as your knot. These three mainstays are easy to tie and accomplish most common fishing tasks. Remember, moisten the line to reduce friction before drawing any knot tight. If it doesn’t look right, cut it off and tie again.

THE IMPROVED CLINCH KNOT Use this quick, non-slip knot on hooks and swivels. Breaks at 85-90 percent of line strength.

THE NON-SLIP LOOP KNOT For the most natural action, tie on hard baits with this knot that leaves a loop at the end.

TOURNAMENT MATH

Want that tournament edge? Bet the percentages. Keep your bait in the strike zone more than your opponents by fishing quickly, wisely and efficiently to double your chances. Twice the casts with the same baits and patterns produces twice the fish. —Ben Adrien

BREAKING IN BEGINNERS

Keep it simple when introducing a beginner to the sport. Asking a novice to use advanced tactics will only lead to a discouraging and frustrating outing. Kayak fishing isn’t just about the fish—time on the water is an experience to savor. Patience will earn a new fishing partner. Expect to be out-fished. Beginners have all the luck. —BA

DON’T FOLD UNDER PRESSURE

When fishing areas that receive a lot of pressure, downsize your lures. The clearer the water the smaller you need to go! Smaller lures are harder for fish to discern from the real thing. —BB

PUT ON THE BRAKES

When a monster is taking you for a ride that could last hours, drop your legs in the water to create additional drag. Cock one leg to steer the nose to the side. If that’s not enough of a slow-down, wave a buddy over and go for a two-kayak fish tow. —JC

THE DRYSUIT DANCE

HOW TO ESCAPE FROM FULL- BODY IMMERSION PROTECTION

LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED! Unzip your suit and make a big cookie monster with the zipper and shout to the whole parking lot, “It’s about to get funky in here!” Bust out the funky chicken. Flap those wings hard and get those sleeves flying off. Your suit now flying around your waist, stick your thumbs in your pockets and break into a country line dance! You’re almost there Pardner. Now that your suit is sliding down to your ankles, go to the Riverdance Laddy! Stomp them feet, hands behind your back! Nobody will know the level of coolness you’ve attained while you strip that suit off in style… break it down now! —BM

UNI TO UNI KNOT NON-SLIP LOOP KNOT

Also called the double uni, this knot is commonly used to join two lines. Tie one half and then the other. If one line has a dramatically smaller diameter, add wraps around the standing line. Example: eight turns for braid and four for mono. —Paul Lebowitz
