Our Bad, and Surfer Says… Joel Cooper’s heart stopping shot of a kayaker stroking for the surf of his life on Lake Superior (Early Summer 2011, www.adventurekayakmag. com/0017) features the supremely brave Ray Boucher, not Ryan Siegel. We asked Adventurekayakmag.com readers to put themselves in

Boucher’s cockpit for a recent photo caption contest. Wiseacres Susan Kerlin and bottleviking wonAdventure Kayak T-shirts for their respec- tive quips: “Ever feel like you are being followed?” and “Forget ‘Cowabun- ga’—try ‘Kitchi-gummi!’” Runner-up Jeff Fujioka wrote, “A few more surfs like these and I’m ready for the Hawaiian Pipe Contest.” While Brendan Rory observed, “Fresh surf on Lake Superior often means spending all day in a lineup without seeing another soul.”

STILLS

STORM SURGE I don’t ever remember seeing wave sets like these. It was like being on the Pacific Ocean. The storm started on the morning of October 26 and finally let up after midnight on the 28th—Ryan Seigel ventured into the surf that afternoon. The wind gauge showed a steady s’west 80 km/h with gusts to 113 km/h for 28 hours straight. It was one of the most intense storms ever re- corded in the Midwest. The storm center went west of Lake Superior, unlike the autumn gale that crossed directly over the lake on November 10, 1975, sinking the Edmund Fitzgerald.
