Information access is a strong theme in this issue of Research Information. First, there is the cover story about access to resources via mobile devices (page 14). Although most companies note that mobile access only accounts for a small proportion of the traffi c to their content today, there is considerable excitement about the potential for mobile websites and apps to empower researchers. Technology is also starting to change the way that information resources are used in the developing world, according to Lenny Rhine, who trains librarians, doctors and researchers in how to use the many scholarly resources available through the Research4Life programmes (page 22). He noted how the availability of WiFi in some institutions has changed the way that people can interact with content and predicts that smartphones will have a similar effect in the future. Of course no focus on access is complete without the obligatory discussion about business models. On pages 10 to 12 industry leaders share their different experiences of open-access publishing.
