Manufacturers Gear Up for First-Ever CAFE Standards for School Buses

Te resultant staggering lines at fuel stations nationwide that fell and extended through March of the following year led to the 1975 enactment by Congress of Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, for passenger vehicles. Now, some 30 years later, school buses are joining the mix. Cars manufactured in 1978 averaged only 18 mpg, accord-


ing to NHTSA, and it took until present day to advance fuel economy for passenger cars and trucks to meet an average of 30.2 mpg. Currently, cars must offer an average of 30.4 mpg, and light trucks and SUVs must offer 24.4 mpg. Meanwhile, CAFE is scheduled to increase to 37.8 mpg and 28.8 mpg, re- spectively. Many would say the movement toward increasing vehicle


fuel economy has not occurred quickly enough, especially with pump prices still around $3.75 a gallon nationally. But
