SAFETEA-LU Getting an Update

A six-year, $230 billion proposal for

reauthorizing the federal sufrace trans- portation funding bill was released by the House Committee on Transporta- tion and Infrastructure on July 7 that is designed to put the “trust” back into the federal highway trust fund. Funding is set at 30 percent of the

current level. A separate, two-year pro- posal was also expected by this month in the Senate. Tat’s thought to be more friendly to current programs up for elim- ination, such as Safe Routes to School Program. But House Committee Chair John

Mica (R-FL) said the highway trust fund can’t support a two-year bill, especially because raising the federal fuel tax is not an option.

Ex-Pro Football Player Gets Into the School Bus Game

In response to recent education cuts made in West

Chester, Ohio, former NFL linebacker and hometown hero Troy Evans is offering parents the opportunity to pay for their children to ride school buses this fall. Lakota Local Schools recently cut school bus service for all high school students, as well as kindergarten through eighth graders who live within two miles of their school. Evans, who retired last year as a Super Bowl champion with the New Orleans Saints and played a total of 11 seasons in the NFL, recently started up LBS Bus Service, which will work directly with parents to provide transportation for about $10 per child, per week. “It was more about helping the people out in the

district, providing them a service I knew was needed. Whatever it becomes, it becomes, but I know that in or-

der to do, this you have to jump through a lot of hoops, cross a lot of T’s and dot a lot of I’s,” said Evans, who has nieces and nephews affected by the school bus cuts. LBS began enrollment for the 2011-2012 school year in July.
