ParkWord July/August 2011

We’ve talked a lot in this magazine about using intellectual property (IP) in theme and amusement parks. While several venues have enjoyed great success by licensing well-known brands and characters, surely the biggest thing preventing many operators signing up with a licence holder is the cost. Since loosing its Warner Bros licence in 2005, Movie Park Germany has incorporated several new licences, including X-Men, Shrek and Nickelodeon. In fact, the park has spent so much on IP that when the time came to replace its old Gremlins animatronic dark ride, a licence was out of the question. So here’s a lesson for you park operators out there still reticent about investing in branded attractions: there is such a thing as free IP, without actually creating your own characters. Movie Park’s latest move was to choose a classic tale with so much history that it was actually out of copyright and so, new this summer, guests can enjoy Van Helsing’s Factory (see page 28). The only thing the park had to do was steer clear of interpreting Van Helsing in exactly same way as the recent film. A similar approach was employed at Alton Towers back in 2005, when the park added Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, sans Johnny Depp. Elsewhere in the UK, the animation studio Red Star has produced 3D/4D attraction films using evergreen tales such as Robin Hood, Dracula and soon Sherlock Holmes. It varies according to territory, but copyright typically extends to the life of the author plus an additional 50 years, or 75 years for a work of “corporate authorship.” Check it out for your country, then go out and see what stories you can find, and then make them your own!

At long last, we bring you the 2010 attendance figures for top parks around the world, courtesy of AECOM and the TEA. Various factors behind the scenes delayed this latest edition of the Theme Index, but we hope you will still find it useful. Turn to the centre pages for the key charts in a convenient pull-out format, plus details of how to download the full report. With summer now in full swing, I hope that you are having a good season at your park or attraction. If you are not already listed in the Theme Index, may your attendance climb so that next time you are!
