One of WSP’s most promising engineers has won this prestigious accolade, awarded annually by the Institution of Structural Engineers.
Award winner Roma Agrawal is a senior engineer in WSP’s property and development team in London.
She joined WSP in 2005 and has played an important role on several high-profile projects, including the Shard at London Bridge, where she has worked on both the piled raft in the

LAUKONSILTA
INTERNATIONAL CONSULTANT OF THE YEAR
BRIDGEOF THE YEAR
STRATA SE1
WSP triumphed at the annual Engineering Excellence Awards in May for the building services design (large consultancy category) at the Strata SE1 tower at Elephant and Castle in south London. The awards are held by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) to reward innovation, originality, creation of lasting value, sustainability and successful fulfilment of a client’s brief. Strata SE1 is a 148m-high, 43-storey residential tower, and the design team were challenged not only to kick-start the regeneration of the area but to achieve an EcoHomes assessment rating of Excellent. The tower is the first development in the world where wind turbines are integrated within the building fabric. It also has a high-performance facade with openable vents for natural ventilation, low-energy lighting is used throughout the building, and each apartment is fitted with a whole-house ventilation system with heat recovery.

The Laukonsilta bridge in Tampere has been named as Finland’s Bridge of the Year 2011 by the Association of Finnish Civil Engineers.
Laukonsilta is a long-span pedestrian bridge crossing a 95m-wide waterway in the city centre. WSP Finland’s Pekka Pulkkinen and his team designed a single-pylon cable-stayed steel bridge, with an inclined pylon and horizontally curving deck – an aesthetically bold solution which required very careful structural planning.

WSP's geographical diversity and portfolio of iconic projects around the world set it apart from the competition at the NCE/ACE Consultants of the Year Awards, where it was recognised as International Consultant of the Year.
According to NCE magazine, WSP “has proved that oversees work can win you new contracts at home”, with overseas earnings accounting for 69% of its 2010 revenue and expertise developed in other markets contributing to important project wins in the UK. The judges highlighted success on the City Line in Stockholm as “a catalyst for growth in the UK rail business, leading to important project wins such as Bond Street Station for Crossrail and London Bridge Station for Network Rail”.
