This issue, WSP’s engineers are playing a vital role on Stockholm’s largest-ever project, gearing up to deliver new landmarks and links around the world, and celebrating some very prestigious award wins.

WSP ACQUIRES ENVIRONMENT SOFTWARE BUSINESS

WSP has boosted its environmental and energy consulting business with the acquisition of environmental software company Natlikan.

STOCKHOLM’S CITY LINE REACHES CRUCIAL STAGE

Work on Stockholm’s City Line has reached a critical stage, with WSP's engineers on standby as the blasting of a vital connection tunnel commences deep beneath the city centre.

From late June, the blue underground line will be closed for a four-month period to enable workers to link the new City Station with the existing blue line through an area of bedrock measuring just 3m across.

The City Line is one of the largest projects to date for both Stockholm and WSP, and the group is providing a range of multidisciplinary services including detailed design, project management and site supervision. Construction of the new line

involves boring a 6km rail tunnel between 10m and 40m below central Stockholm from Tomteboda, north-west of the city, to Stockholm South Station. WSP is responsible for the largest and most complex part of the project, covering about 2km of the line, delivering three major contracts – the Norrmalm Tunnel, Norrström Tunnel, and City Station. They are now 80% complete.

“We have come far, or very far, in all of them and most of the work is moving very well,” said

WSP project manager Roberth Colliander. “Although we are responsible for some of the most complicated contracts throughout Project City Line, we are both on time and on budget and we have not caused any major disruptions to the service, something I’m very proud of.”

The current phase is particularly important because there are many tunnels that must sit within the same small area, so there is no room for error. The four-month programme is also fixed – all work that affects the blue line must be completed or it will have to wait until next summer, delaying the whole project.

A SUSTAINABLE CORPORATE HQ IN RECORD TIME

WSP Flack + Kurtz has played a crucial role in delivering a new laboratory and office building for pharmaceutical company Regeneron in record time – just a year from design to occupation.

The 130,000ft2 facility was

designed by BAM Architectural Studio, with WSP providing all mechanical, electrical and plumbing consultancy services. This included the planning and installation of high-efficiency boilers, energy recovery wheels for air-handling units, demand control ventilation and high- efficiency lighting and controls.
