Meeting the challenges of the 21st century requires a very diverse range of skills and expertise. In this issue we explore how WSP is responding to two of the biggest: sustainable transport and green retrofitting.
Both keeping cities moving and ensuring the built environment is fit for the future encompass an enormous range of disciplines, and must be approached afresh in different sectors and geographies. I am proud that WSP has the breadth of knowledge and experience to offer creative, effective and appropriate solutions to our clients, wherever and whatever the challenge.
Refurbishment of existing buildings is key to achieving a low-carbon built environment. In the UK, there are around 26 million homes and 2 million commercial and non-domestic premises that must be refurbished by 2050. That means we will need to refurbish at a rate of one building every minute for the next 40 years – a formidable task, but also a tremendous opportunity. On pages 8–11, we feature just a few of the diverse retrofitting projects WSP is undertaking around the world, from commercial office buildings to 1960s housing, and rural libraries in Romania to Scandinavia’s historic churches. Bringing existing stock up to today’s environmental standards is much more complicated than building sustainably from scratch, not only from a technical point of view but because of the sheer variety of the structures involved. There is no simple, one-size-fits-all answer – every project must be approached with ingenuity and sensitivity to local conditions and aspirations.
In transportation, our projects also span the globe and this issue of Solutions provides examples of the many approaches we offer in planning, developing and delivering efficient, sustainable solutions for our clients in the transportation sector. These developments include three of London’s most high-profile schemes, a new transport hub in San Francisco, and our first major rail project in Scotland, with a personal account from one of our senior rail specialists on the redevelopment of Waverley Station in Edinburgh. I hope you enjoy it.
