undergrad experience

Joshua Watson Bachelor of Business, majoring in Management and Public Relations, Swinburne University.

Joshua undertook a 12-month industry-based learning (IBL) placement at the Australian Crime Commission (ACC). After completing his placement, Joshua continued working with the ACC before taking a full-time position with Department of Justice (DOJ) portfolio.

What appealed to you most about the ACC program? I first found out about the program at a presentation by the Swinburne IBL coordinator. The ACC program intrigued me from the start. A few weeks later I found myself working for Australia’s national criminal intelligence agency.

How has your placement at the ACC benefited your career and current position with the DOJ? IBL opened the door not only to positions within the ACC, but gave me the experience I needed to move on to other roles externally. Without my two-and-a-half years with the ACC I would not have had the experience necessary to obtain my role with DOJ.

My IBL experience has provided me the knowledge I needed to succeed thus far. It has been great to put what I’ve learnt at uni into practice, and gain invaluable real world experience. My organisational, communication and leadership skills have improved a great deal.

How do you manage your time and conflicting responsibilities when working and studying full time? While I wouldn’t want to do it all the time, all it takes is some commitment, motivation and time management. I have really learnt how to prioritise my activities and ensure I meet all deadlines. Surprisingly, I have still managed to continue my volunteer work and maintain a busy social life.

I am also fortunate to have had a great group of teachers who continue to be very supportive and understanding of my endeavours and work commitments.

What have you enjoyed most about your experiences? I have been fortunate enough to have been presented with a great range of experiences. Highlights include various trips interstate and having the chance to work with some great people from many different backgrounds.

It makes learning so much easier once you’ve had the real world experience. IBL has also helped me determine where I want to head in my career.

What advice would you give to other students thinking of undertaking IBL? Do it! IBL gave me an invaluable head start to my career, and means that when I graduate I will well and truly hit the ground running.

Try and find a position that really interests you. Take every opportunity that comes your way; you never know where it may lead! It’s your career, make the most of it!
