undergrad experience
Denise Moore Bachelor of Business Tourism Management, Southern Cross University.
As a full-time mother Denise sought out a locally-based internship. She utilised the Southern Cross University (SCU) CareerHub to locate and apply for her internship at the SCU Office of Sports and Cultural Activities (OSCA).
How did your internship fit in with your degree? A four-unit internship is a part of my degree in the Bachelor of Business Tourism Management. Completing the 20 weeks or 600 hours has helped me gain further knowledge and confidence in my chosen field of event management.
What were your responsibilities during your internship? During my internship I have been responsible for organising many sporting events including the running of Session 1 social sport for students. Coordinating and managing an event from start to finish has given me the
experience needed to utilise the skills and understanding I had gained during my degree. I had the opportunity to organise activities for students participating in the Northern University Games. I was also given the chance to coordinate students, staff and alumni in the Gold Coast Marathon, giving them information relevant to competing for Team SCU.
How do you feel your internship has benefited you? Having the opportunity to coordinate an event from start to finish has developed my confidence and enhanced my event management skills. Gaining an insight into sporting event management has allowed me to network, make contacts within the industry, and in turn will lead me to a career in sporting event management in the future.
How do you the juggle the multiple challenges of family life and full-time study? My children are older now so they are a little easier to handle. Saying this, I was still the taxi driver, cook, counsellor and argument controller. Studying externally did make life a lot easier as I could time my study to be completed when the kids were at school and at night when they had settled and gone to bed. The biggest hurdle of external study at home was not allowing my mind to wander, leave my studying and go to do household chores. To make my life more comfortable, I did spend a lot of time at the uni library. I was able to complete hours of work there in a relatively short time.
