Adm. Steve Abbot, USN-Ret. (Life Member since 1988): Abbot graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in 1966 and attended the University of Oxford in England
as a Rhodes scholar. Abbot commanded the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN- 71) during Operation Desert Storm and the Theodore Roosevelt battle group while assigned as commander, Carrier Group Eight. Abbot commanded the Sixth Fleet from 1996-98. Before retiring in 2000, Abbot served as deputy commander in chief, U.S. European Command. Abbot currently chairs MOAA’s board of directors.
Col. Monica Messer, USAF-Ret. (member since 1995): Retiring in 1996 from a 30-year career in the Air Force Nurse Corps, Messer took on the start-up and management of the TRICARE and TRI-
CARE For Life programs for more than 100,000 benefi ciaries in Florida. She earned a doctorate in nursing practice in 2008 and currently is a nursing Ph.D. candidate at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Lt. Col. Donald Van Roosen, USA-Ret. (Life Member since 1992): A highly decorated veteran of World War II who went ashore at Omaha Beach, Van Roosen has continued to distin-
guish himself through service to his community. An Eagle Scout, he has served in many leadership positions in scouting. Since moving to Pinehurst, N.C., in 1998, he has been involved in the United Way. He also serves on the Village of Pinehurst’s planning and zoning board and chairs the Village of Pinehurst’s water committee.
Lt. Cmdr. Roy Yaple, USN-Ret. (member since 1996): Yaple served 21 years in the Navy, including a tour on the staff of U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Neb., and as XO for the ROTC units
at Northwestern University and Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Yaple is president of MOAA’s Southeast Michigan Chapter and has served three times as president of MOAA’s Michigan Council of Chapters.
