Find out which councils and chapters received top honors in the 2010 Communications Award contest and page through some of the winning entries on MOAA’s Web Base.

A panel of judges convened at MOAA headquarters in Alexandria, Va., earlier this year to review the 196 en- tries that were submitted for MOAA’s annual Communications Award contest. MOAA takes time every year to recognize its councils and chapters that do an outstanding job communicating with their members. Submissions were broken out by membership size, with councils and chapters competing in the following seven categories: print newsletter, e-newsletter, website, best legislative coverage (print), best legislative cov- erage (website), best recruiting bro- chure, and unique communication.

The Florida Council of Chapters took top honors in two competitive categories — print newsletter and website. Maj. Marion “Mick” Cotten, USMC-Ret., editor of The Council Communiqué, and webmaster Lt. Cmdr. John Snyder, USN-Ret., both received kudos from the judges for their outstanding coverage of council and chapter activities. The skillful writing of Col. Don Kaiserman, USA-Ret., helped the Richmond (Va.) Area Chapter win best legislative coverage (print) in the Large Category (600 or more members). Another Virginia affiliate, the Mount Vernon Chapter, won best

e-newsletter in Category I (400-599 members) for the e-Despatch, which Col. Stu Williams, USA-Ret., edits. Spouse Charlotte Johnson’s edi- torial skills helped the Riverside March Field (Calif.) Chapter’s print newsletter, The Raincross, win in Category II (300-399 members). Attracting new members is a priority in Arizona, where two chapters received best recruiting brochure awards. The Luke Chap- ter grabbed top honors in Category III (200-299 members), while the Arizona Chapter won in Category IV (120-199 members). A newcomer to the contest, the

New River (N.C.) Chapter received two awards in Category V (fewer than 120 members). The chapter’s print newsletter, New River Cur- rent, edited by Col. Kenneth Lynn, USAF-Ret., received top honors, and the chapter received a unique com- munication award for its postcards, featuring the work of local artists and information about the chapter, which members sell to benefit the scholarship fund.
