Can Hillcrest’s soul be bought with 16 parking spaces? Evidently not, as shown by the Hillcrest Town Council vote on May 10th. The HTC joined nearly every other community organization in the area

including Uptown Planners, Hill- crest B.I.D., North Park Planning Group, and University Heights Community Association in oppos- ing the Mid-City Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Opposition to the project’s design is not just about parking. A Street is much more than a place to store cars. A Street is a place where people live, work, play, and move. It includes vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, trees, sidewalks, and the buildings which define its shape and form SANDAG’s design strips Park Boulevard of all these qualities. scaping, makes no accommodation for bicycle lanes, treats pedestrians as an afterthought, and closes Polk Ave to through traffic. There is no question. Park Boulevard CAN and SHOULD be a vital, livable, beauti- fully landscaped, urban street, with great Public Transportation. I can only believe that Councilmember Gloria (and Uptown News) shares our vision of a great Park Blvd. The question is; will Mr. Gloria support a redesign of the project along Park Blvd, and will he work with SANDAG to achieve a great street. I certainly hope that in the future
Uptown News will be more com- plete and inclusive in its reporting on the BRT, especially in how it affects the streets and neighbor- hoods of its Readers. I am the person who presented these issues and ideas to the Hillcrest Town Council and urged the HTC to join other community groups in their opposition. I’m glad they did. I am also a resident of Park Blvd.
