SCOTLAND RECYCLES MORE WASTE THAN EVER BEFORE


DETAILS Scotland’s local authorities con- tinue to recycle more waste than previous years according to figures from Scotland’s environment watchdog.


During the period October 2009 to September 2010, 37.7% of municipal waste collected by councils was recycled or com- posted. There were also further drops in: • the total amount of municipal waste col- lected by local authorities – down 69,675 tonnes to 3,184,254; • municipal waste going to landfill – down 102,814 tonnes to 1,893,935; and • the tonnage of biodegrad- able municipal waste, such as garden and food waste, which is being sent to landfill – down 68,066 tonnes to 1,135,798. DETAILS In 2009, UK greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol were esti- mated to be 566.3M tonnes carbon dioxide


equivalent (MtCO2e) – 8.7% lower than the 2008 figure of 620.5M tonnes. Between 2008 and 2009 there were decreases in emissions in all sectors, including 11% from the energy supply sector, 11.8% from the business sec- tor, 36.5% from industrial processes, 4.2% from the transport sector, and 5.8% in the residential sector. CORPORATE EXPRESS DETAILS Australia’s leading office products company has released its third annual sus- tainability report which met a GRI ‘A’ rating level. The 2010 report introduces Staples Soul, the company’s commitment to CSR. Results demonstrated in the report include: working with key offshore suppli- ers to help them achieve compliance with the firm’s ethical sourcing policy; raising AU$46,000 (£30,086) to help those affected by the floods that affected Queensland earlier this year; reducing emissions by 17%; increasing the tonnage of plastic/cans/glass that was recycled by 97%; and increasing the number of females in senior leadership roles from 9% in 2008 to 33% 2010. VODAFONE GROUP DETAILS Vodafone’s Sustainability Report 2011 provides an overview of its strategy and performance across 24 markets, and how it is performing against its sustainabil- ity strategy: creating sustainable societies, eco-efficiency and responsible, ethical and honest behaviour. BOEING DETAILS Boeing’s fourth annual Environ- ment Report shows that while the firm increased airplane production, it generated year-over-year improvements in environ- mental performance. Since 2002, on a revenue-adjusted basis, Boeing has reduced emissions by 28%, energy consumption by 30%, hazardous-waste generation by 44% and water intake by 41%. HSBC DETAILS The bank’s Sustainability Report 2010 covers seven sustainability priorities, including its contribution to the economy through the day-to-day operations, by providing employment, paying taxes and countering bribery and corruption. In 2010, HSBC paid $5.8B (£3.5B) in tax, and $19.8B in employee compensation and benefits. It has also been generating new revenue

VERIZON DETAILS Verizon’s 7th Annual Corporate Responsibility Report shows how the com- pany’s broadband and wireless technolo- gies are tackling pressing issues such as education, domestic violence prevention and sustainability.


The firm invested $297M (£182M) last year in the development, education and training of employees. It also partnered with its healthcare provider to reach out to more than 81,000 female employees and their family members to highlight racial and ethnic disparities in breast cancer screenings and outcomes to encourage early detection. CEMEX DETAILS The 2010 Sustainable Devel- opment Report from CEMEX met a GRI-checked level of ‘A+’ for the third consecutive year.
