Ph.D. candidate Frank L.Hammond III was nominated for the “Best Paper in Automation” award at the IEEE 2009 International Confer- ence onMechatronics andAutomation. The paper, co-authored with Professor Kenji Shimada, is entitled“Improvement
ofManufacturingWorkcell Layout Design UsingWeighted Isotropy Metrics.”The paper was selected as one of only four nominees for this award, from among 1,800 submissions.

Fellowship.Established in 2001 by CIT alum Philip Dowd and wifeMarsha, this fellowship supports graduate students working on cutting-edge research projects.Lee will present her research at the Dowd Fellowship Symposium this fall.

Sophomore Charles Munoz received the 2009-10 Boeing
Scholarship.Last year, threeMechE undergraduates received Boeing Scholarships:Eric Blood,Sean Lubner, and Patrick Rosas. These scholarships are awarded annually to students interested in a career in the aerospace industry.

winner.TheASME Foundation andASMEAuxiliary grant these prestigious scholorships to 10 high school seniors each year. Nalborne plans to join theMechE Department next year.
Fall 2009Teaching FellowsNamed
The Department ofMechanical Engineering has named seven students as UndergraduateTeaching Fellows for the Fall 2009
semester.This program, launched in 2007,offers outstanding undergraduates the chance to serve as student mentors for core undergraduate classes.Teaching Fellows also assist faculty members with projects, run labs,hold office hours, and administer help
