Torbay endorsements Why Torbay is a great place for PAWRS
I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to the organisers, participants and visitors to this year’s Plant and Waste Recycling Show on Paignton Green.
I am confi dent you will once again fi nd our hospitality second to none.
The fact that Torbay has once again been selected as the venue for this
prestigious event on the Bay’s calendar is a clear refl ection of your satisfaction with everything that Torbay has to offer. Torbay can justifi ably boast its green
credentials.
Four years ago we received international recognition for the English Riviera’s rich geological, historical and cultural heritage by being awarded Geopark status.
We are also extremely proud of the fact that Torbay offi cially has the cleanest bathing waters in the country.
We are fl ying the Blue Flag over no
fewer than six beaches this summer. Added to which, ten of the Bay’s beaches have secured Quality Coast Awards for being clean and safe.

This total of 16 awards is more than anywhere else in the country. With waste disposal forming part of my executive lead portfolio,
I am particularly pleased to say we have a good news story to tell about recycling. Last year Torbay Council teamed up with May Gurney to form
a new joint venture company called TOR2 which delivers a wide range of operational services. In September, TOR2 introduced an improved household waste
and recycling collection service across the Bay, enabling residents to recycle much more than previously and help reduce the amount of waste being sent for costly landfi ll disposal. The service took a little time to settle down but, thanks to the
support and co-operation of our residents, we have now seen a nine per cent increase in the Bay’s recycling rate to 45%. We anticipate we will hit the 50% mark in 2012, well ahead of
the government’s target date of 2020. I hope that during your stay you may be able to fi nd some time to
check out what else Torbay has to offer. But for now, it’s on with the show and I wish it every success.
