Editor’s introduction
Why the annual industry trip to Torbay is so important for the waste sector
No year in the waste management calendar would be the same without the industry’s annual migration to Torbay. And thanks to Richard Hunt and his hard-working team at
PAWRS, this fi ne tradition shows no sign of abating. Where else in the UK can you fi nd refuse collection vehicles rubbing shoulders with road sweepers and all within a pebble throw from the beach? Where else can day trippers enjoy a Mr Whippy while gazing at the very latest of litter bins and municipal vehicles? But don’t be lulled into a false impression that a trip to
Paignton is nothing but an excuse for an industry ‘jolly’. A lot of serious business takes place on the stands, in the pubs and the restaurants. The joy of this event is that because exhibitors and their visitors are away from the tyranny of the offi ce, everyone is relaxed, so there are plenty of opportunities for a chat, a gossip and a catch-up; not forgetting those all important deals. In these straightened economic times, attending the PAWRS
show in Paignton means you get a lot more for your money; added to which you are in a more relaxed surroundings with none of the hassle and expense of going into the city.
Two other events at the show deserve a mention. The 5th South
West Waste Recycling Forum is holding its conference at the Redcliffe Hotel in Paignton on Tuesday and Wednesday. Find out how Torbay Council are working in partnership
with May Gurney on a new waste service and how Glastonbury recycles its waste. And no show would be the same without a sparkling awards night and PAWRS 2011 is no different. On Wednesday night, make sure you book your place at the
Riviera International Centre and fi nd out, e.g. who is the local authority of the year, which is the best municipal vehicle rental company and which product wins the industry innovation award. So, with so much to enjoy, so many people to see and so much to discuss - here’s to another successful Torbay industry gathering.
