Jeffrey leaves Transport Initiatives Edinburgh as remedial works start n
The man in charge of Edinburgh’s troubled tram scheme has left the project abruptly. Richard Jeffrey had been chief executive of Transport Initiatives Edinburgh for two years. On his appointment, hopes were high that he could revive the scheme, which has stalled amid a lengthy contractual dispute. Trams were originally
scheduled to be running in the city around now. However, with no breakthrough in sight, Edinburgh City Council is now seeking to lease surplus trams to Transport for London for use on the Croydon network. In a statement, Jeffrey said: ‘I remain convinced that trams are
part of the solution for future generations, and I look forward to travelling on the city’s trams.’ Jeffrey and the scheme’s
chairman, Vic Emery, are understood to have disagreed over the approach to mediation with key contractor Bilfinger Berger, with Jeffrey favouring a more belligerent line. Last month, project managers and contractors said they had ‘set aside their differences’ and agreed a programme of remedial works to repair city centre roads. However, traders were enraged to learn this would mean nine further months of disruptive traffic diversions. The city council is due to
consider the future management of the scheme next month.
