laser Zentrum hannover presented examples of green photonics at the show, including the use of laser technology for light- weight construction, for regenerative energy production, as an alternative to environmentally harmful processes, as well as new energy- efficient laser systems. For example, LZH laser technology can be used for processing CFRP materials (carbon fibre reinforced plastics). This technology is instrumental in innovative light-weight concepts for the aeronautical and automotive industry. Expensive and costly raw materials can be reduced and the use of fuel can be lowered. LZH laser technology is also important in the production of regenerative energy. In this field, lasers can be used for welding glass tubes for higher quality solar receivers, or for increasing the energy efficiency of photovoltaic cells.

Furthermore, the LZH presented new fibre components, which can be used in energy efficient fibre laser systems for material processing, or for medical technology, including a newly-developed, ultra-short laser oscillator based fully on fibre lasers. manufacturing. The LaserCleave eliminates mechanical scribing, which can cause fibre chips and hackle, and also reduces the need for polishing steps in order to meet GR-326 (Telcordia) compliance. The device is robust and small enough to be integrated into a production line. spi lasers, part of the Trumpf group, launched four new products at the show, including a redPower branded fibre laser with between 500W and 1kW output, and a new 500W fibre laser in the R4 product family. The redEnergy brand has been further developed to include the next generation fibre laser platform, G4, which includes fibre lasers in the 10-70W power range, building upon the company’s popular G3 MOPA range. A green pulsed laser will also be introduced in the company’s redEnergy range. SPI’s high power OEM fibre laser systems offer integrators the capability to manufacture

The flexible system allows users to integrate different laser modules, such as Lumera’s Super Rapid, in order to adapt to various micromachining requirements. The system can be configured with either excimer, DPSS, or picosecond lasers for large area patterning or direct write processing. Also on display was the company’s IAP system, which provides


equipment for cutting and welding applications in the industrial macro sector with scalable output powers. The lasers allow the integrator the ability to differentiate their product by customising the optical and electronic control interface performance and functionality for the specific application. The display featured a new multi- laser engine (iChrome MLE) with up to four different wavelengths, designed for microscopy and cytometry. From the company’s broad portfolio of scientific diode lasers, it showed a narrow-band CW system with 2W at 589nm – with an example of what the lasers do to a group of Rb atoms. Active coherence control (BlueMode) opens new possibilities in industrial inspection applications. Also presented were two highly compact and cost effective sources for THz generation: a CW-laser at 1.5µm (TeraBeam) with fibre-pigtailed antenna modules, and a fibre-based fs-laser (FemtoFErb) ideally suited for time- domain THz. www.toptica.com
