evatec has extended its Optics Toolbox software to reduce the development time and costs of producing high-end optical thin films, such as 3D interference filters. The company’s ‘Thin Film Toolbox’ allows seamless integration of film design software, a proprietary strategy generator for layer termination, process recipe generation, and control of the coating process. The toolbox now supports both quartz-based and optical monitoring technologies.

lighttrans recently introduced its VirtualLab 5 software for field tracing during the design of optical systems. Field tracing is a technique based on considerations of harmonic fields and provides more information than ray tracing about light in optical simulations. The approach allows the software to take into account diffraction, interference and polarisation effects, and aberrations caused by optimisation of the simulation. The software supports the design of micro-structured elements used in highly compact optical systems. VirtualLab 5 offers optimisation methods including local and global parametric optimisation, the iterative Fourier transform algorithm, and a design algorithm for grating cell arrays. This enables the design of diffractive beam splitters, diffusers, shapers, elements for shaping LED light, and gratings, as well as the optimisation of laser systems.

ophir photonics has introduced version 5.5 of its BeamGage laser beam analysis software. The new version supports 64- bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, as well as the company’s USB L11058 large format beam profiling camera. The 11-megapixel, 35mm
format L11058 is designed for measuring large laser beams. Its high resolution, 4,008 x 2,672 pixel format allows profiling of beams up to 24 x 36mm without requiring reduction optics. Frame rates of up to 3.1 frames per second at full resolution increase throughput and productivity. The camera accurately measures CW laser beams over a spectral range from 190 to 1100nm, with a wide dynamic range of 59dB.
