WORKING FOR VOYSEY ROOF OF MASTERPIECE RESTORED

Roofing specialists John Williams & Co. Ltd have just completed a sensitive re-roof and associated restoration to Spade House (now Wells House Nursing Home) at Sandgate, nr Folkestone.

2

Spade House was the home of HG Wells for around 10 years and it was here he wrote many of his books including Kipps, The History of Mr Polly and The War in the Air.

1 UNIQUE PROPERTY: Voysey’s drawing for Spade House

2 WORK IN PROGRESS: Around 40,000 handmade tiles were used to re-roof Spade House

3

3 JOB DONE: The sensitive restoration is completed

Of equal interest is the important fact that HG Wells commissioned the renowned architect, CFA Voysey, to design the property overlooking the English Channel.

Spade House is a remarkable achievement to both men’s genius and thanks to the roofing craftsmen from John Williams will remain so now and in the future.

4 HANGING AROUND: Tiles at a gable end of the property

5 REAR VIEW: Roof restoration at the rear, but main entrance to Voysey’s masterpiece

6 HANDMADE TILES: The tiles for Spade House were sourced locally from specialists Spicer Handmade Tiles of Bethersden, Kent.
