BEHIND THE SCENES

many high-quality print publications, we love telling people about where we live, work and play. We recently expanded our reach by

introducing “Postcards from Charles- ton,” a half-hour television show that will air on the Travel Channel, with the help of a Charleston-based business. “Our main sponsor was

Vacation Station, and without their support and willingness to offer our viewers fantastic vacation packages, it couldn’t have happened,” Media Ser- vices Publisher Bill Macchio, co-host of “Postcards from Charleston,” explained. From beginning to end, the vision of the show was to highlight the Low- country’s most popular destinations in a fun, informative way. “People love to come to the South

Carolina Lowcountry,” Macchio said. “Some people probably thought they

couldn’t afford to visit, while for oth- ers, this is their first introduction to the area. Hopefully, this will convince them to pay us a visit.” Frida Hill, co-host of “Postcards

from Charleston,” agreed. “I learned a lot from the show, even though I have lived in Charleston for the past 15 years. The Charleston Vacation Guide was a big help, which is why it’s out there for visitors. View- ers of the show will learn a little more about Charleston and its hot spots

For our biggest shoot, our co-hosts

started their day before most of the city was awake. To get around in the Charleston area, they used four different modes of transportation: a horse-drawn carriage, a taxi bicycle known locally as a rickshaw, a water taxi and a trolley. Three cameras followed them around town while myself and two others stayed a step ahead, making travel reservations and helping our co-hosts with scripts. It was both exciting and rewarding to see so many people working together to bring it all together. “What a lot of people don’t

know is that it was cold and windy the day we did the shoot,” said Hill. “Luckily, the sun was still out.” In the course of one day, we

were able to introduce our view- ers to the historic Charleston Market, White Point Gardens, the Charleston Harbor, Shem

and people who have

been here will be able to relate.” Creating a half-hour telecast takes months of planning, communica- tion and organizing. As the associate producer, I recognize the tremendous amount of work that goes into creat- ing a high-quality, informative show.

Creek, Folly Beach and the Isle of Palms. Interestingly enough, on the same day, a Carnival cruise ship was in Charleston boarding passengers on their way from Charleston to other destinations. It always is fun and challenging to work in downtown Charleston, a
