SMASH UP THE STUDIO MIDI Keys: Disco Fever

Midi £19.95 VERDICT 9/10

ALL THOSE FAMILIAR with using midi files in their productions will wax lyrical about their benefits to anyone who wants to listen. If you’re still a midi virgin, you’re missing out. ‘MIDI Keys: Disco Fever’ contains no sound samples, but a multitude of files written in midi language which carry the velocity, accent and complexity of song parts. There are bass, clav, horn, guitar, moog lead, piano, rhodes, string and synth hook parts, all in midi notation, meaning you can use any sounds from your DAW or sample library to create unique sections of your track. You could even mix it up and try the midi patterns

with the wrong instruments. That’s how most new sounds are found — by total accident. The real beauty of midi is that the notes within the files are fully adjustable, so once you’ve set up a track with the midi inspiration from ‘Disco Fever’, you can tweak each set of notes to your heart’s content. Anyone into recreating a disco vibe (whether it be old school, nu or balearic) should take note of the beautifully crafted riffs and melody lines on offer. Check out the video on the opposite page for another take on using disco melodies — in dubstep.
