THE PULSE
NEW CHURCHES
CITY ON A HILL CHURCH
BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS
Pastor Bland Mason
WHEN DID THEY START?
Officially launched in 2009, City on a Hill was birthed out of Hope Fellowship Church in Cambridge,
Mass. Beginning first as a Sunday night gathering in the Brookline area of Boston, the church recently started another core group in the Allston area and in February purchased office and ministry space in a building formerly owned by a Greek Orthodox Church.
WHO ARE THEY REACHING?
The Brookline and Allston areas are filled with various cultures and with influential and affluent people, from college students to young professionals. “We reflect the diversity of our community. We are a faith community of people from a variety of backgrounds, interests and life stories who have found common ground in our desire to explore what it means to follow Jesus Christ and to actively love our community. Our church includes people who have been following Jesus for many years, some who are new to the journey, and some who are exploring Christianity for the first first time.”
WHAT ARE THEY DOING?
City on a Hill has built its church from a core group into an eclectic missional community through intentional relationship building, outreach among college students, professionals and even through chaplaincy work with the Boston Red Sox.

Bringing the Gospel Home (Crossway, 2011) by Randy Newman offers a fresh and, at times, personal perspective on reaching the lost closest to us—in our families and among our closest friends. With the breakdown and perversion of family and friend relationships, being a gospel presence in these
contexts has grown increasingly difficult, Newman says. Newman also provides the gospel-centered response we should have to this disintegration. We are to serve the cause of reconciliation with words but also in the context of restored and nurtured relationships. We must reflect Christ relationally if we are to declare Him verbally.
