TIDEWATER KAYAK ANGLER’S ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL CHARITY TOURNAMENT tkaa.or g/tournament
For seven years running, TKAA’s conservation-minded membership has converged on Virginia’s productive Tidewater area. It’s an inshore fishing paradise, where striped bass, redfish, largemouth, speckled trout and flounder are found in close proximity. The September 23, 2011, edition benefits Heroes on the Water and Project Healing Waters.
TIP SHEET 2008 TKAA champion Tom Powers prospects for new productive areas. “That way we can decide if we want to fish one of our favorite spots or go to some place new on the tournament day,” he says.

The craggy coast and cold, rugged waters are no match for the Albion Open’s warm-hearted camaraderie. Northern California’s premier rockfish and lingcod big-fish battle is also about camping out and chowing down among the tight local kayak fishing brotherhood. In 2011, the party starts July 22.
TIP SHEET Tournament director Craig Davis says when conditions are rough, seek shelter. In 2010’s 25-knot winds and huge swell, he played his cards close to the chest. “We stayed in the cove and had a steady pick of fish,” he says. That choice won Davis second place and also produced the winner.

There’s no greater test of big water skills than this blue Hawaiian behemoth. The grind starts February 1 and it doesn’t ease up until September. It’s hard to the core, paddle-out only, with unreal catches such as tuna, ulua and Andy Cho’s amazing 225-pound 2010 blue marlin.
TIP SHEET Isaac “Rocket” Brumaghim directs the series. He’s also a ripping competitor. He says staying fit is critical. “It’s a long road,” Brumaghim says, “and you have to put in the days to get results. Spend a lot of time in the kayak and cross train in the offseason.”
