Major kayak tournaments are popping up all over the country. With big sponsors and hefty payouts, the competition is fierce and information closely guarded. That didn’t stop our operatives. They tracked down recent winners of North America’s toughest tournaments (plus one from Hawaii). Here’s what we discovered, including a few choice tidbits on bait selection. The world’s longest running kayak fishing tournament celebrates the extraordinary life of a beloved local waterman. Each September, fields of up to 200 big game hunters charge La Jolla, California’s pre-dawn surf, paddling a dozen miles or more in search of hefty yellowtail, white seabass and halibut. Above all, this event run by prominent pro Jim Sammons is a strike against cancer.
TIP SHEET “Prefish as much as possible,” 2009 winner Scott Sherman says, “even if you can’t get out, go down to the beach and talk to guys who are coming in.” He also suggests scouring websites, tackle shops and outfitters. “I’ve even hired a guide before a tournament,” he adds.
