Designer’s Guide, Tim Allinson — April 2011

Tim, I just read your column in this

month’s Plumbing Engineer maga- zine. Tell John Mesenbrink I was reading the “print” copy of the mag- azine — I’m old school. I always enjoy your columns as they are often informative and sometimes just plain entertaining. This month it was all that and then some. I believe the most appropriate descriptor would be heartfelt! The touching words you shared with your readers about your dad’s final days was extraordinary. I didn’t know him, but I’m sure the world was a better place while he was here. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

FPE Corner, Sam Dannaway — April 2011

Sam, I liked your message in Plumbing

Engineer. The points you make should be the focus of a panel discus- sion at an SFPE meeting. From a philosophical perspective the prob- lem is that nobody wants a sprinkler system — they are told they must have one. And why does nobody want one? Because they are not mar- keted to the public. Instead of mar- keting sprinklers, the industry lobbies for legislation that requires them. Once you have legal requirements, page inflation is the norm. If they are

any good, why don’t people want them? If people wanted sprinklers, there would be page deflation, as the industry would be motivated to improve their product.

John M. Watts, Jr., Ph.D., director Fire Safety Institute

Jack, Thanks for your comments, and

thank you very much for reading the article. I am honored that one of my teachers — who I have read exten- sively — has read me. Yours is the third comment I’ve

receives and all three have a different take on the article. I cannot put my finger on it, but it appears the article has struck a chord of sorts. Your message of marketing instead

of mandating is right on and needs to be put out there. Aloha, Sam.
