Training tools for the pool

Speedo advisory coach Dan Bullock explains the key features and benefits of core swimming training aids, to help sales advisors raise awareness and create demand for these margin enhancing products.

T

raining Aids are a growing category within the swim market, as consumers quest for speed has resulted in a whole industry of items designed to make you stronger, sleeker and more efficient. Used correctly, many of these training aids can help build endurance and improve technique, however most consumers are unsure what equipment to use. Many training aids have both a technique and resistance application, depending on the way they are used.

Paddles are great for resistance and technique work. Tech paddles make the hand seem bigger, resulting in holding more water, which allows the arms and shoulders to work a little harder. Speedo suggests advising customers to purchase a paddle not much bigger than their hand. Smaller finger paddles are available to improve a swimmer’s feel for the water. Fins allow swimmers to increase propulsion and ankle mobility and are great for practicing drills, because they allow you to stay relaxed as you move more slowly through the water.

Kickboards help develop the correct leg mechanics, which is essential when improving your swim technique as the important thing is developing the correct footwork, not speed.

A pull buoy can help improve speed, as it improves the body position in the water. Designed to provide a comfortable alternative to the traditional use of flat floats, it is held between the thighs to allow arms to move with normal timing and rhythm , creating additional

workload to the arms for a greater training effect.

A pullkick is a

combined piece of kit which offers benefits of both a pull buoy and a kickboard. There is enough buoyancy for the float to be used to lift the legs, if used as a pull buoy, and

also enough to support the arms for kicking. It also cuts down on kit you have to take to the pool.

Using a central snorkel eliminates the need to turn your head to breathe, helping to establish the correct head position. It’s much easier to focus on drills the first few times you do them, if you do not have to consider the timing of the breath. Retailers can cross-sell snorkel masks and nose clips as bolt

on accessories to improve swimming with this aid.

Drag shorts are used on top of swimwear to create extra drag whilst swimming and are similar to other training methods with high resistance, like running with ankle weights or cycling with a heavy frame in winter. They can really make an impact to the amount of effort expended during a session and help build strength and endurance.

Speedo launches new unitary packages

Speedo has launched a new range of display units to help retailers create branded areas in their stores, as well as shop-in-shop environments.

The new unitary provide a clear swim destination for customers and allow retailers to combine numerous merchandising options with the use of shelves, graphic holders, try- before-you-buy goggle displays and footwear shelves in order to drive sales.

Speedo said sales from stores who have implemented this new unitary have shown ‘significant uplift’ in sell through, particularly where ranges have been cross-merchandised in line with Speedo’s recommended planograms.
