Sage advice from the trenches
By Ron Jones
Passion and Profit
Not everyone has the opportunity to make a living doing what they are most passionate about, although I think it is fair to say that people in the business of providing shelter stand a better chance than most. And those of us who do should be really grateful. I can honestly say that I can’t remember the last time I woke up in the morning and couldn’t wait to see what that day was going to bring my way. With that in mind, I want to share with you a couple of the favorite parts of my daily puzzle.

Earlier this year we announced the launch of a newly formed non-profit organization we call the Green Builder Coalition. It is a grass roots advocacy group made up of individual members from around the country who are passionate about sustainability and what that means to generations to come. Given the current economic and political climate, we need all the supporters for sustainable solutions and strategies we can find.

In just a matter of weeks we have members literally from coast to coast and border to border, from Carolina to California and from Minnesota to Texas. Already our ranks include builders, designers, material specialists, program directors, marketing experts, and homemakers. Each and every one of us has a personal commitment to a better, brighter future in a more sustainable world.

I am personally asking every person who reads this column to visit the organization’s web site and see what we’re up to. We have lots of room to grow, and we are hungry for new energy and new ideas. If you share our passion, we can’t wait to hear from you.

The second item I want to mention is a fledgling enterprise that we affectionately call “The Store,” which can be found at We are definitely hoping it will be a profitable venture but, as you those of you who know me might expect, there is a little more to it than that.

The Store is an online shopping mart for Green Builder(r) branded products, starting with work wear and job site accessories, with a twist. We are just getting under way with our offerings of everything from natural fabric and organic clothing, to high quality reusable water bottles, to safety gear designed to biodegrade after its service life. We hope to specialize in team products that can be branded with the identifiers of your own organization or company in addition to the Green Builder logo.

And we plan to add more environmentally friendly and socially responsible product lines over time, so if you know of any really cool products we might want to make available please let us know.

One more thing, from the very beginning we have had a strong desire to offer as many American, or at least North American, made products as possible. So especially if you know of a company or manufacturer that fits the bill I hope you will let me know directly at Thanks, and may you always do what you love and love what you do!
