River Signals
C1 Outfitting Tip Fellow T-grippers, In response to the letter about C1 outfitting (asking if you can use contact cement to attach D-rings to plastic kayaks—”River Signals,” Rapid V4I3) try one of the 3M products that are made specifically for polyethylene. They are called Scotch-Weld Structural Plastic Adhesive DP 8005 and Scotch-Grip Plastic Adhesive 4693.

As Good as a Pool Noodle? I read your magazine all the time. I was won- dering if you could fill me in on those inflatable kayaks that you see at Canadian Tire [a large Canadian department store that sells more than just tires]. As I was walking down the aisle I came to a big display board where they hang all their new tents and pools and other stuff like that. As I was looking at the board I noticed this big tube-like thing. At first I thought it was a big snow-tube, but then I saw the person in the cockpit. The “paddler” was in full gear: He had a Bomber Gear water jacket with a Lotus PFD and a graphite paddle. I thought that this was just some funny joke they had up there. When I went down the next aisle I saw them for sale! I was really confused. When I saw the price tag I almost passed out. It was $99.99. It was just a huge piece of plastic with air in it. It might just be as good to buy a pool noodle. Could you explain this to me?

After your letter we found the inflatable boat in the local Bancroft, Ont., Canadian Tire. The sales clerk, although very friendly, would not comment on its whitewater performance. But he did mention they were selling well. We have decided to include it in our upcoming “Big-Air Boat Shootout.” Stand by for the results in the June issue of Rapid magazine.—Ed.

your article on the Slave River (Rapid V4I4). You referred to Fort Smith as “the NWT's govern- ment, education, and whitewater centre.” It is no doubt that Fort Smith is the premier whitewater centre north of 60, but it is not the NWT's gov- ernment centre. That designation is given to Yellowknife, the capital city which is down the river and across the lake (a big lake at that). Being a resident Yellowknifer for the past 15 years and a whitewater kayaker for the past 4, I have been drawn to the stories about the Slave River. Your article was excellent! I am sure that the river will be packed with kayakers from around the world next season. That is if they can stand the bugs!
