Muegge pointed out that Hog’s Back is not to be taken lightly. “Certain dangers do exist and advanced paddling skills are required to safely run this rapid.” But he said it’s a shame the run’s off limits just because it’s in an urban area. “This rapid is a classic and is no more danger- ous than what you might find on other local rivers like the Ottawa, Petawawa or the Rouge.”

New Ambassador of Squirt It was an early Christmas gift for die-hard squirt boaters.


In December, 2002, self-professed squirt addict and 2002 U.S. Champ Deb O’Keefe founded the North American Squirt Boating Association. NASBA will present the North American Squirt Boating Championship during the 2003 Jimicup on the Ottawa River in August. O’Keefe’s goal is to improve the organization of squirt competitions and “celebrate cubic free- dom,” on the water and online— www.northamericansquirt.com.


Boat Werks Sold The Boat Werks chain of Ontario paddling shops have been sold along with the websites www.boatwerks.net and www.ottawariver.com. The original owners, Kieran Andrews and Scott Murison of Peterborough’s Wild Rock outfitters, sold the business to employee Jeff Strano, who managed Boat Werks for the past three years. Strano has big plans including store franchises and website developments.


Screwed up and forgotten We asked Jim Walker to brave crappy weather to test- paddle the Wave Sport Transformer for last issue’s boat review, and then forgot to identify him as the paddler in the photos. Oops.


June 8 Skip Church and Paddle Planning your year? Don’t forget that Heritage Minister Sheila Copps has declared the second Sunday of June “Canadian Rivers Day.” The West has celebrated BC Rivers Day for two decades and Ottawa figured it was time to get with the program. Copps said that rivers are “an indelible part of our national consciousness” but forgot to mention anything about tricky-whus.
