The Lakehead Scene October 5th brought the much-anticipated Second Annual Thunder Bay Kayak Festival and Rodeo. The event took place at local paddling hot-spot Crooked Rapids on the Kaministiqua River (roughly a 40-minute drive northwest of town). A mostly sunny and wind-free day high- lighted 20 dedicated competitors giving their stuff for a paddle-hungry audience. With good tunes bumpin’, high water flowing and dozens of choice spots to get close to the action, every- body had a great time.

Sensitive Guy Speaks Out I'm writing in response to Tiffany Manchester's Chic Chat article, “High heels... No Boat” (Rapid V4I4). She writes that guys think it’s sexy to see a woman throw down in a hole.... hell yeah!!!! There are, I think, more sig- nificant stumbling blocks for women to enjoying the river than lack of boats. There seems to be the same problem with boating as there is with surfing. That is, a bunch of muscle-bound pad- dling jocks don't give women the time of day on the river, but expect to hang out off the river. I've been fortunate to have many women friends, as well as men, to go paddling with. When for what- ever reason it works out that there are only a bunch of guys out paddling it's still fun but I always feel like something's missing. We should do whatever we can on and off the river to not act like a bunch of baboons.

Buy this Magazine!

I want to applaud you for the quality of your magazine. I just took out a subscription after reading some reviews of open boats on the Net. Although I've had the obligatory subscription to Paddler with my membership to the American Canoe Association, the quality and choice of your articles is far better. Really a superior job.
