pioneered the art of “storm sea skiing” back in the 1980s. Ocean whitewater kayaking has grown considerably in recent years on the Pacific coast, although due to the hazards involved and the somewhat ambiguous nature of paddling in the ever-changing conditions of ocean whitewater, I doubt it will ever be as pop- ular as river whitewater paddling. And that’s always been part of the appeal to me. Whiting mentions the need for a hybrid kayak that will surf, play in ocean whitewater, and still function as a sea kayak that can cover some dis- tance on the open sea. A few (very few) designs do exist for this purpose. They include the Mariner Coaster and the open-cockpit Tsunami X-15. Both of these kayaks surf well compared to other sea kayaks, and they will also perform on the open sea in stormy conditions. Perhaps something even better could be designed, but there are inescapable trade-offs involved. For, example, a boat with too much rocker won’t cruise well in wind and waves.
Thanks again for highlighting this aspect of sea kayaking. Perhaps it is a fringe activity, but it is nothing new.

El Granada, CA Artsy cover critic
As a photographer as well as a pad- dler, I want to con- gratulate you on having the courage to buck tradition and publish a black and white cover shot (AK
online V5 I2). I’m
sure a lot of discussion must have gone on around that decision. However, in comparing it to the colour origi- nal on page 18, I think it would have been nicer to keep the clouds in the sky rather than digital- ize them out into an empty white space, but everybody’s a critic aren’t they?
