APP REVIEW

APP NAME : SOUNDGRID DEVELOPER : VITALIY PRONKIN FORMAT : PRICE :

SOUNDGRID is a loop based grid sequencer, very similar in concept and design to the Yamaha Tenori-on hardware device. It utilizes a 16 by 16 ‘matrix’ board, which represents four bars (adjustable) on one axis and 16 notes on the other. In the basic demo the notes ascend every step then step-and-a-half through a chromatic scale (for theorists, that’s a blues pentatonic except for the augmented fifth). It looks like the scale sequences are adjustable, though we couldn’t find an obvious way to select another scale. You can choose up to 8 of 20 instruments to

program the layers, and each instrument can have up to 8 different loop patterns. The matrix is very easy to program, whereby you tap a position to hear the note and hold to place the note.

Amplitude envelope, delay, resonant filter and layer volumes are close at hand to get the loops you have created sounding right in the mix, and you can export to WAV, AAC or ringtone format. This is a good app for producers who are thinking of buying a Tenori-on, want to brush up on loop sequencing, or just fancy composing their own ringtone while on the move.

VERDICT 7/10
