Supporting role

Public sector contractors may need help to support staff through periods of change, says Lynne Crowe, regional manager at Hays Construction Ahead of what is certain to be a very difficult year in the public sector, employers need to act now to put in place systems to support staff both practically and emotionally, and make sure redundancies are handled appropriately. Being made redundant can feel like a huge setback and can have a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem and confidence. If they are not supported during this process, they are likely to remain unemployed for longer, which ultimately puts further strain on the public purse. Employers clearly have their part

to play in ensuring that employees who have been made redundant are offered comprehensive advice to help them with their career transition. There may already be qualified HR staff in-house who can provide advice on all aspects of the job application and search process. Or employers may wish to bring in an external company, such as a career transitions expert, to provide support. If redundancies are handled badly

and people leave on unfavourable terms the employees remaining in the business will have a more negative view of their employer. In our recent research, a total of 85% of public sector workers believe career transition support should be compulsory and more than half of employers in the public sector agree. Just over 70% of employers go as far as to say the government should offer funding for it. Inevitably, there is a cost implication

to this kind of support, but investing in this now can help avoid longer-term problems. Protecting the employer brand is a worthwhile investment, even in difficult times, to prevent problems recruiting talented people in the future. It can also have an impact on how service providers are perceived by their customers. If financial support is limited, HR

professionals need to be creative in how they can support staff during this period of change. As well as identifying ways to redeploy staff, they should offer opportunities to retrain and provide advice and counselling if possible. Hays Career Transition Services has

been established to help employers faced with making redundancies, by providing a support service to their employees. To find out more visit www.hays.co.uk/hays-outplacement. aspx
