Meet a member FACULTY VACANCIES

Faculty of Architecture and Surveying seeks new Chair and board members

Nik Michalakis assistant construction manager, Overbury

Why did you choose to get involved with your CIOB branch and Novus in particular? Extra curriculum work gives one a sense of fulfilment. Of course being part of the CIOB Branch Committee involves sacrificing personal time but you get the chance to be involved in workshops, working papers, networking etc. The work we do at the CIOB is for the good of the industry as a whole and for everyone’s benefit. We will shortly be talking to sixth form students about the construction industry as a career prospect, for example. That’s where the fulfilment comes from: giving something back and encouraging others. It is also an opportunity for me

to socialise with other construction professionals and helps me to keep my construction contacts up to date.

FAS is looking for a new Chair and board members

If you are an architect or surveyor with vision and drive, who is capable of expanding the role and relevance of the Faculty of Architecture and Surveying (FAS), this is your opportunity to be considered for the position of Chair. The current incumbent has completed the three-year tenure and applications are now sought for the position.

Board members A number of FAS board members are also completing their three-year tenure. These members leave having been fully involved with FAS since its inception — they have made a real difference to the faculty’s development as many planned projects

have come to fruition during their term of office. The board meets three times a year in

January, May and September; and at other times communication takes place via email. Expressions of interest are particularly welcome from CIOB members who wish to contribute to the work of the faculty. Travel and expenses will be reimbursed in line with CIOB policy.

Members wishing to be considered for positions on the board should email a current CV to Veronica Dunn, FAS manager, at vdunn@ciob.org.uk. Alternatively, if you wish to discuss your application call 01344 630798

Novus NW continues success with more events

Novus North West organised a talk to students at Manchester Metropolitan and Salford universities in September and the group is planning a Tour of Victoria Baths renovation project in Manchester for October. Novus NW was launched in June this year

with a party at Epernay Bar in Manchester. Eight members sit on the Novus committee:

Harry Basra (chair), Fred Rowlinson (vice chair), Hannah Spotwood, Andy Johnson, Georgis Kapogiannis, Ian Simmons (all education liaison and membership officers), Nicola Irons

(activities officer) and Chris Boles (marketing). Novus NW aims to provide support and

encouragement to progress students and young construction professionals to MCIOB and to provide mentoring, networking and a forum for young construction professionals and students. Novus NW will also be co-ordinating a number of events over the coming months.

For more details on Novus NW contact Hazel Yorke at hyorke@ciob.org.uk

Tell us a little about your career path to date and ambitions for the future I graduated from the University of Westminster with a BSc in Construction Management in 2005 and started work at Heathrow Terminal 5 for Permasteelisa (UK) while studying part time at Kingston University for an MSc in Construction Management and Construction Law. When Terminal 5 finished I decided

to move on from sub-contracting to main contracting and that’s when I moved to my current role, which I’ve been in for two and a half years. I am currently in the process of changing my role to that of assistant quantity surveyor. My future aspirations are to become stronger in the commercial side of construction and gain further legal qualifications that will allow me to get involved in adjudication and arbitration.

What are the challenges facing young construction professionals today? I think the main challenge is to join the industry. Unfortunately due to the recession a lot of apprenticeships and graduate schemes have been cancelled or postponed, leaving young construction apprentices and graduates midway through their training and with no light at the end of the tunnel. In one case the CIOB stepped in to find new places for graduates after a main contractor cancelled its industry placements which would have resulted in the apprentices being unable to graduate without completing their industrial placement year.
