MANUFACTURINGINTEGRATION

Reprints are a valuable sales tool

The future together Panasonic made its intentions clear when it began its takeover of Sanyo. The company wanted access to Sanyo’s green technology to create a large enough entity to take on the global renewable energy market. The integration of three energy technologies has provided the company with a total solutions package for both residential and commercial development of energy needs. The realisation of these dreams will not be plain sailing for the new entity.

Firstly the start up costs of a huge venture like the Kansai Green Park stop many a CEO in their tracks and the Sanyo venture has not being open long enough to provide the data required to convince potential customers. This will be rectified in a year or two and meanwhile any number of competitors will try to either compete with similar technologies or develop something new.

Battery storage is going to be a key development to turn renewable energy from a niche concern to a genuine global industry and not everyone is convinced that current battery technology is the way to progress. In Sanyo’s favour there are not many convincing alternatives and they hold the prime position at this point.

Total solutions may seem a great idea but many companies have found that limiting consumer choice through a total solution can back fire spectacularly. Company spokespersons at the Kasai plant were quick to point out that no customer has to buy the total package and elements of the Sanyo solution can be picked by customers to fit into their energy needs. There is much talk of bespoke solutions based on customer needs. Of course the company is hoping Kasai will provide all the evidence for potential customers.

The goal is no less than the number one position in all aspects of the technology they are producing and it would be fair to say that this will be in reach of the combined company as they are building on already formidable positions. Holding onto that position in the face of increasing competition and new technologies is the real challenge for the Sanyo division of the Panasonic group.
