AUTHOR EVENT MONDAY 28 FEBRUARY, 6 P.M. Bing West, author of The Wrong War: Grit, Strategy, and the Way Out of Afghanistan
The Obama administration has embraced a broad counterinsurgency policy, pairing combat operations with a strategy of winning hearts and minds of the local civilian population. Will it work in Afghanistan?
Bing West, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs under President Ronald Reagan and former Marine, will assess the prospects for
success in Afghanistan and discuss his provocative plan for a way out: put- ting Afghans in charge of their own war.
Bing West, a Vietnam veteran, wrote the Vietnam classic The Village, which war colleges use as a primer in counterinsurgency. West’s books on Iraq have won several awards. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Rela- tions; his articles appear in The New York Times, The Wall St. Journal, and other major newspapers. He also appears on National Public Radio and The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.
