James Raffan Whether or not Tumblehome columnist Raffan was born in a canoe is debatable, but his knowledge of canoeing lore is indisput- able. Of the birchbark canoe that inspired “Birchbark Misadventure” (page 18), Raffan says, “With daily repairs, we collected little splotches of tree gum from all sorts of memo- rable locations, which are now souvenirs as tangible as a Niagara Falls bumper sticker.”
Cliff Jacobson Living just a five-hour drive from his beloved Boundary Waters, Jacobson is one of North America’s most respected outdoor writers. When he doesn’t have a canoe on his roof, Jacobson enjoys zipping around in his little,
red BMW roadster with the top down. On his scathing criticism of straight paddles (“Bent vs. Straight Shaft,” page 40) Jacobson says, “I think readers will see through the smoke.”
Peter Bowers By day, Bowers is a trader at a financial firm. When he’s not buying and selling, he’s happi- est canoeing and shooting photos. He ranks trips on the Yukon’s Snake River and Quebec’s Coulonge and Dumoine rivers (Canoescapes, page 12) among his most memorable and most creative. “I think my photography flows naturally from these outdoor activities.”
Paul Mason A longtime illustrator for Canoeroots, Mason keeps readers smiling with his Bubblestreet
comics. Co-writer of Thrill of the Paddle, he also enjoys instructing whitewater canoeing tech- niques (“Backward Thinking,” page 44). Mason is a fan of canoeing’s ever-evolving teaching method because it has “led to more happy canoeists and new fodder for cartoons.”
Michael Mechan Canoeroots’ newest editor has worked with outfitters and summer camps for 12 years, teaching and preparing paddlers. Mechan joined the Canoeroots team in September, after picking up some travel pointers on a 10,000-mile road trip to Alaska (“Are We There Yet,” page 30). Of life on the road, Mechan says, “I’d gladly trade the driver’s seat for a canoe seat any day.”
