“The Iowa room is the best room in the World to train in,” he said. “Coaching-wise and with the training partners we have, it’s what fits best for me. You step in the room and you are motivat- ed to train hard. That’s why this is the place for me. It’s top- notch.”
Iowa associate head coach Terry Brands, a two-time World freestyle champion, said Metcalf has continued to make improvement. “Metcalf’s become more savvy in the practice room, and he’s learning from his mistakes,” Brands said. “He needs to continue to get better with his leg attacks. He’s working real hard like he
always has. We like him and we like what he’s capable of doing. He believes in himself and we believe in him.” Metcalf said the U.S. is not that far away from being a top team in freestyle. “It’s not like guys are getting their butts handed to them and don’t have a chance,” he said. “Some guys are losing matches by getting pushed out of bounds and losing in the clinch. But why are you getting pushed out and not winning the clinch posi- tion? We are right there, but we need to win those positions. “We need to have an attitude and a swagger, and we need to be tougher than anyone that steps out there on the mat against us.”
