20 QUESTIONS WITH... Helen Maroulis
Helen Maroulis is one of the top women’s freestyle wrestlers in the United States.
Maroulis represented the United States at the 2008 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Maroulis earned a spot on her first U.S. Senior World Team on her 17th birthday.
She placed eighth at the 2008 World Championships at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.
Maroulis is currently ranked No. 2 in the U.S. at 55 kg/121 lbs. She dropped a hard-fought, three-match series against Tatiana Padilla in the finals of the 2010 U.S. World Team Trials. Padilla went on to win her second World bronze medal. Maroulis won a bronze medal for the U.S. at the 2010 Junior
World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. She also won a Junior World bronze medal in 2008.
The Maryland native previously spent time training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Mich., and at Missouri Baptist.
Maroulis is now wrestling for Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada.
Among her teammates is two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony.
Maroulis recently won the Hargobind International tournament in Canada.
Maroulis took time out of her busy schedule to answer 20 questions for USA Wrestler. 1. Favorite Movie? Toy Story 3
2. Favorite TV show? It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
3. What kind of music do you listen to in your iPod before you compete?
Anything with a beat (mainly rap or techno). 4. Favorite food when not watching your weight? CHOCOLATE! (I eat that even when watching my weight). 5. Favorite sport other than wrestling? Soccer
6. Favorite athlete to watch in another sport? Michael Phelps
7. Favorite wrestler and why?
I can't pick one! But if I had to, I guess Cael Sanderson because of his movement and Dan Gable for his inspiration. 8. Best piece of advice you've received? “Give it everything you got, go full blast” - from my dad (I've been hearing it for 10 years now).
9. What kind of advice would you give a younger wrestler who is just taking up the sport? I would tell them to stick with it because its an incredible
sport.
10. Best moment as a wrestler so far? Making my first Junior World Team. 11. Name three people you would love to invite to dinner? Gandhi, Lady Gaga and Obama. 12. What is one thing you are afraid of? The dark!

15. What is one thing about you most people don’t know? I’m Greek 16. Any idea of what you will do after your competitive career is over?
Not yet, but I’m working on it.
17. What do you do during a typical flight overseas? Watch the movies! Think about food! This time around I'll probably be studying, though.
18. Coolest place you've traveled to and why? Kalamos, Greece. There is nothing like it. 19. What would it mean to make the 2012 Olympic Team? Words cannot describe what it would mean to me. 20. Funniest girl on the team and why? Victoria Anthony, because we easily find the same things hilarious.
